The Best Way to Experience the Gascoyne: A Festival Road Trip Like No Other

Some destinations are best explored through their landscapes.

The Gascoyne is best explored through its food.

Stretching from Shark Bay to Carnarvon, Coral Bay, Exmouth and Dirk Hartog Island, the Gascoyne offers visitors a unique opportunity to discover one of Australia’s most extraordinary regions through the people, produce, stories and places that define it.

The best way to experience the Gascoyne isn’t to stay in one place.

It’s to hit the road.

Start in Carnarvon: The Gateway to the Gascoyne

Every great Gascoyne adventure begins in Carnarvon.

Renowned for its plantations, fresh produce and multicultural heritage, Carnarvon provides the perfect introduction to the region.

In 2026, Taste of the Gascoyne brought together more than 12 communities that have helped shape Carnarvon. Through food, music and cultural traditions, the event celebrated the diversity and warmth that makes this regional town so special.

The 2026 The Plantation Feast brought guests together amongst blooming mango trees for a long table lunch led by award-winning chef Jessica Roe from Petition Kitchen, showcasing Gascoyne produce alongside premium Di Latte Estate wines.

The Festival also offered hands-on workshops exploring the region’s food culture, including traditional sausage making and fish filleting and smoking experiences led by local producers and makers.

Follow the Food Trail

No visit to the Gascoyne is complete without exploring the Taste of the Gascoyne Food Trail.

From Shark Bay to Exmouth, local cafés, restaurants, breweries and roadhouses created signature dishes for the 2026 Food Trail featuring one of the region’s most iconic ingredients – wild-caught Shark Bay and Exmouth prawns.

The trail showcased local businesses and hidden gems while encouraging visitors to discover the region through its food.

Enjoy everything from garlic butter prawns and seafood platters to prawn pizzas, poke bowls, handmade pasta and innovative chef creations. Along the way, you’ll discover why seafood plays such an important role in the Gascoyne’s identity.

Discover Culture and Connection

The Gascoyne’s story stretches far beyond food.

One of the 2026 Festival’s most meaningful experiences was Fireside Yarns: Land, Sea & Story, where guests gathered beneath the stars to share stories, native flavours and cultural knowledge. The evening offered a powerful opportunity to connect with Country and gain a deeper understanding of the region’s living cultural heritage.

These experiences remind us that every landscape has a story, and every meal is connected to people, place and history.

Head North to Coral Bay

As you continue north, the landscape transforms.

Turquoise waters replace plantations, and the Ningaloo Coast becomes the backdrop for a series of unforgettable experiences.

Join the Seafood & Coastal Sounds sunset cruise from Coral Bay, where migrating humpback whales, seafood canapés and spectacular Ningaloo sunsets combine to create one of the Festival’s most memorable evenings. The celebration continues afterwards with live music from the Family Shoveller Band.

In 2026, the Seafood & Coastal Sounds sunset cruise brought guests onto the waters of Coral Bay for an evening of Ningaloo scenery, seafood canapés and coastal atmosphere, before the celebration continued at Bill’s Bar with live music from The Family Shoveller Band.

Experience the Magic of Exmouth

Exmouth offers a completely different perspective on the Gascoyne.

In 2026, the Festival celebrated the region’s coastal lifestyle through food, wellness and community events.

The 2026 program included the country atmosphere of the Whalebone Hoedown, the wellness-focused Skin & Gin: A Luxe Wellness Experience, and the intimate six-course Breathe. Gather. Feast. degustation inspired by Ningaloo seafood and regional produce.

As the 2026 Festival moved towards its finale, Moonrise Over Ningaloo brought guests together for an elegant coastal dining experience featuring local produce, premium wines and the glow of the full moon.

Finish Somewhere Extraordinary

The best road trips always save something special for the end.

In 2026, guests gathered beneath endless skies at Bullara Station for fire-cooked beef, local wines and authentic station hospitality.

The Festival finale also took guests to Dirk Hartog Island for Australia’s Last Sunset, combining dramatic coastal landscapes, local seafood, regional flavours and island hospitality.

Few places in Australia offer experiences as remote, authentic and memorable.

Rare. Remote. Unforgettable.

The Gascoyne Food Festival was created to showcase the character of this extraordinary region. EEvery 2026 event was designed to reflect its location, bringing together chefs, growers, fishers, producers and cultural custodians to tell the stories of the Gascoyne through food.

So if you’re wondering about the best way to experience the Gascoyne, the answer is simple.

Take your time.

Follow the coastline.

Meet the people.

Taste the produce.

And let the road lead you from plantation to ocean, from station to table, and from one unforgettable experience to the next.
