Gyotaku & Feast: Fish Printing meets Japanese Cuisine

Carnarvon | Friday, 28 August

Discover the art of Gyotaku, the traditional Japanese practice of fish printing, in this hands-on workshop led by regional artists Hol and Joe from By Hol + Joe.

Originating in Japan as a way for fishers to record their catch, Gyotaku transforms the natural beauty of fish into unique works of art. Participants will be guided through the entire process, from preparation and inking through to printing and adding hand-painted details, creating their own keepsake print to take home. The workshop encourages creativity, storytelling and a deeper connection to the ocean, while exploring a centuries-old practice that celebrates both fishing and artistry.

Throughout the evening, a curated Japanese dining experience will be seamlessly woven into the workshop, allowing guests to enjoy a series of thoughtfully prepared dishes inspired by the traditions and flavours of Japan. Showcasing local seafood and seasonal ingredients, the menu will complement the creative journey, bringing together art, culture and cuisine in an immersive and interactive experience.

This unique experience embraces the philosophy of Fish, Print, Eat, Repeat, celebrating the catch through creativity, connection and exceptional food.
